Bring them home!
The 2022 outdoor season will be remembered for the Edmonton Fusion FC. A double title for our men’s team, a successful season for the pre-academy soccer in French, the growing Pro Soccer Training program, and soccer clinics in francophone schools highlight several important successes for the club after two years impacted by COVID-19. Overview.
Men’s team, champions XXL
The club’s flagship team achieved an incredible double: EDSA Division 2 Regional Champion and Provincial Champion! After a first experience at this level in 2021 and a respectable 3rd place finish, Edmonton Fusion FC dominated their division. With 13 wins, 1 draw and 2 losses, 58 goals for, only 18 against, Fusion finishes at the top of division 2 with 6 points ahead of its pursuer for a total of 40 points. A success highlighted by club president Joris Desmares-Decaux. “This is a great performance by the players and the coach. Four years ago, the Edmonton Fusion FC men’s team started in the lowest division of the EDSA. Today, the team won division 2 and advanced to division 1 and won the provincial tournament organized by Alberta Soccer Association. A great achievement for our young club.”
The EDSA championship title qualified the team for the provincial tournament held in Calgary from September 3 to 5, 2022. Edmonton Fusion FC outplayed their four Tier II opponents, which included teams such as Calgary and Cold Lake. Results without appeal: 4 games, 4 wins, 21 goals scored, 6 conceded. The Fusion puts its name on the provincial soccer cup with style.
Individual performances are also to be highlighted. The title of top scorer of the season division 2 EDSA goes to the Fusion player DEKA MULAMBA with 24 goals scored. The players PEPUKAYI “Edwin” MAPURISA and IBRAHIM ABDELBAGUI finished respectively 1st and 2nd best scorer of the provincial tournament with 7 and 4 goals each.
The players were able to celebrate these two important successes with activities financed by the club.
Soccer en Français pre-academy
After two springs/summers impacted by the COVID-19 that significantly affected the activities of the Edmonton Fusion FC Pre-Academy Soccer in French, the young players were able to fully enjoy an unrestricted 2022 outdoor season. This year, the club is proud to have allowed approximately sixty young francophones and francophiles, aged 3 to 11, to learn or improve their soccer skills under the direction of our instructors. In total, 31 sessions were organized from May to August with two activities per week on Wednesday and Saturday.
For the second year in a row, the children were able to take part in a photo shoot. The individual pictures of which were published in the September 15 edition of Le Franco newspaper. An additional feature much appreciated by parents and especially by children who can show themselves as their idols do.
Combined with the presence of parents, the “Soccer en français” pre-academy activities provided true community gatherings appreciated by all.
Pro Soccer Training
This Edmonton Fusion FC Elite program was launched in February 2022 under the leadership of new academy director Paul Addo. For this outdoor season, Pro Soccer Training offered one to two performance sessions per week completely free of charge to young U13 boys wishing to improve their technical, physical and mental aspects of the game. The sessions took place from June to September. Pro Soccer Training is also available for players in the U15 categories. A great success that attracted players from the best clubs in the city.
Le Soccer c’est pour tout le monde (“Soccer is for everyone”)
This spring, Edmonton Fusion FC in partnership with the Fédération des sports francophones de l’Alberta (FSFA) visited eight francophone and immersion schools in the greater Edmonton area to teach the basics of soccer to students in grades 4 to 9. Thanks to the multiple sessions, more than 200 students were able to :
- Learn more about soccer and its rules;
- advance their technical skills;
- develop their leadership on and off the field;
- ensure good physical and mental health;
- and of course… having fun!
